by Steven Zaloga.
Softcover (8.0×10.0 inches). 270 pages. 2025 reprint of 2016 book.
Subtitle: The Battle of Arracourt, September 1944
The title is a bit of a misnomer, as the battles covered are more than Arracourt. These include: Maisy, Epinal, Luneville, Jurelize, and Arracourt. They all involve the attacks of the new Panzer Brigades, which were ill-trained, lacked artillery, and roughly handled by US forces.
I don’t want to say “vintage” Zaloga, but you get his gold standard of opposing forces and equipment overview, situational analysis, and battle recaps. Every one of these chapters could be a scenario. Overview maps are included, with scale, but if you squint enough with a magnifying glass, you can make out the terrain features that would be the basis of a tabletop.
The book contains 238 black and white photos, eight black and white illustrations, and 16 black and white maps.
This is a well-written, well-done book.
Enjoyed it.
