Why is my account suspended?
As part of Phase 3 of HMGS’ Technology Migration, we are attempting to clean up as much data as possible BEFORE migration to the new membership system. Part of that effort includes administratively suspending accounts that have “problematic” data. If your account is suspended, and you would like it reinstated, please contact IT or the Membership Coordinator with your name and a current working email address.
The main reason for suspension is non-working email addresses, as the new membership system uses the email address as the user’s loginID. Also, we need a working email address to communicate to users as we move through the migration process.
This page will continue to be added to as we work through records we don’t believe should be migrated (unless they get updated!).
Suppression Lists
In the current Membership system (Your Membership – YM) there are two “Suppression Lists” – one for Bounced email addresses and one for email addresses with Complaints (mostly “abuse” complaints). YM blocks any emails from being sent from it to any addresses on the lists (e.g, email campaigns, membership renewal notices, activity updates, etc.).
We realize that people change email addresses and don’t necessarily update the email on their HMGS account. Suspending those accounts (thereby stopping any account login or account activity) is the only way in YM that we can highlight to account holders and others that there is a potential problem with their account data.
Bounced list
If an email address is on the Bounced list, it will be suspended by the administrators as part of the data clean up.
- If the account has no activity since the migration to YM (12 years ago), then the account will be modified to a Former Account/Inactive (except for Lifetime Members and Legion of Honor Members).
- If the account has a “fake” email address (e.g., x@x.com), the fake address will deleted from the E-Mail Address field and, if necessary, replaced in the Username field with the account holder’s name.
- If the account has activity and a “real” email address, it will just be suspended.
If the email account is still active, and the bounce was due to a temporary situation, we can remove the email address from the Bounced list and un-suspend the account, allowing it to be migrated to the new membership system.
Complaints list
If an email address is on the Complaints list, it will be suspended by the administrators as part of the data clean up.
- If the account has no activity since the migration to YM (12 years ago), then the account will be modified to a Former Account/Inactive (except for Lifetime Members and Legion of Honor Members).
- If the account has activity and a “real” email address, it will just be suspended.
If the email account is still active, we can un-suspend the account (allowing it to be migrated to the new membership system), but we have no mechanism to remove it from the Complaints list, so no emails will be sent from YM to that email address.
