Stoke Field 1487: Campaign 420

.

.

by Dickon Whitewood.

Softcover (7.25×9.75 inches). 96 pages. 2025.

Subtitle: The Last Battle of the Wars of the Roses

Uneasy rests the crown on an English king’s head during the Medieval period. The Wars of the Roses offered plenty of combat to secure the throne, including the Battle of Stoke Field on June 16, 1487.

In some respects, it was a small battle, for the Earl of Oxford’s troops, the vanguard of the king’s army, defeated the rebels under the Earl of Lincoln before King Henry VII’s force arrived on a parallel road.

The usual Campaign series format is used, with an Introduction (including the failed revolt by Stafford and Lovell), Chronology, Commanders, Forces, Plans, and the nitty gritty of the campaign and the battle. Aftermath deals with the consequences of Henry VII’s victory and the Battlefield today offers a glimpse of a battlefield tour.

The booklet contains three black and white photos, 36 color photos, 11 black and white illustrations, 22 color illustrations, seven color maps, three color two-page action illustrations, and two color 3D illustrations.

Another fine volume in the Campaign series, this one about Henry VII’s efforts to squash rebellions.

Enjoyed it.
