The Florida Campaign 1774-83: The Revolutionary War

The Spanish campaign against the British in Florida during the American Revolution offers an example of what a driven commander with a flair for leadership can do with just enough resources to get the job done. Galvez first cleared the British forts in the area around New Orleans, then led an expedition that captured Mobile.

After that, it was on to siege Pensacola. In wargames terms, a rather lucky die roll decided the siege. In historical terms, a lucky shot decided the siege.

You’ll need a bit more OOB information to make this a wargame campaign, but the illustrations of fortifications provide enough to set a table for each main spot.

The illustrations and explanations of St. Augustine and surrounding Spanish fortifications and various British movements would make for a nice second wargame campaign.

One typo: “for 200 hundred years” (p57) needs the “hundred” deleted.

The booklet contains four black and white photos, 66 color photos, 11 black and white maps, and nine color maps.

It’s an excellent introduction to the Florida campaigns during the American Revolution and quite inspiring to the wargame imagination. Well done.

Enjoyed it.
