Subtitle: History, Organization & Uniforms
This compilation of British forces serving in the colonies during the American Revolution discusses exactly what the subtitle states — and pretty much in order of prominence. The analysis of organization and the nomenclature associated with the various evolutions is impressive.
Units covered, and lots and lots of obscure units are noted, include the infantry, cavalry, and artillery of British, Hessian, and American Loyalists. A smidgen of Marines and Naval types are also included.
I recall a listing of obscure units in one of my other reviews, although which one I couldn’t remember. Looking in the bibliography, it must have been an Osprey. Why? Because 20 of the 30 titles listed were Osprey booklets.
The book contains 47 color uniform illustrations, including Knotels and the other usual suspects as well as custom drawn illustrations. The odd part is that they are scattered throughout the text and not paired with specific text. For example, a number of German “Hessian” uniform illustrations are in the American Loyalist chapter.
One typo I found: “hugh-quality furs” (p3) should be “high-quality furs.”
If you already have all the Osprey booklets related to the American Revolution, they you probably don’t need this book. However, if you’re just starting out, then this offers the usual Esposito thoroughness and is a great place to start.
Enjoyed it.
