The Ancient Germans and Rome: 120 BC to AD 68

.

.

by Raoul McLaughlin.

Hardback (6.5×9.5 inches). 256 pages. 2025.

Subtitle: Records of Contact and Conflict

This is a collection of ancient texts, or mostly excerpts of ancient texts, that showcase interactions between Germans and the Roman Republic and Empire. There is no cohesive narrative and no analysis of the texts — it is translated sections of sources in a generally chronological order. Lots of Julius Caesar, Tactitus, and Dio and a smattering of other lesser-known sources.

This has some value for those researching Roman-German relations and has some impact on finding tabletop scenarios.

The numbers cited are the numbers in the original texts, so…beware of huge tribal numbers.

The book contains 30 black and white photos and four black and white maps.

Without a broader context and analysis of the texts, it’s a collection of original texts.
