When I hear US Marines and WWII together, I think of island invasions in the Pacific. However, the Marines also saw service elsewhere on the globe, as noted in the subtitle.
They guarded bases in the Western Hemisphere and Marine Air Squadrons patrolled the surrounding waters. They served as ship security forces. Three Marines were supposed to be on the Dieppe raid, but were reassigned just before the operation. Some landed in North Africa as part of Operation Torch and seven of them landed at D-Day.
Col. Robert O. Bare sent a letter to a friend about participation in D-Day planning (p226-228). Capt. Marvin C. Ross was part of the ‘Monuments Men’ team.
The book contains 301 black and white photos, 21 color photos, three black and white illustrations, four color maps, one 301 black and white cartoon, and numerous photos of letters, records, citations, and other documents.
It’s a nice photo-intensive collection of accounts of Marines on the ‘other’ side of the world. They may be the unsung Marines of WWII, but this book shows they cannot be forgotten.
