US Tank Tactics in World War II: Elite 269

by Steven J. Zaloga.

Softcover (7.25×9.75 inches). 64 pages. 2026.

The title says one thing, but the text provides another. I was expecting explanations on, well, US tank tactics. What I got more often than not were long excerpts from US manuals that often explained the goals of an attack, not the attack itself. I got the feeling, and this is just me, that Zaloga was called in at the last moment to patch something together to meet some deadline.

On the plus side, the hedgerow-busting tactics are well explained. That’s more like it. The rest, not so much. Indeed, I read and re-read sections to see if I had missed something. Errr, specific tactics-wise, no. At best, a little too generic, I’m afraid.

The organizational information is solid, as is the evolution of tank formations.

One possible typo: “attack was conducted by three infantry defenses” (p46) is likely “infantry divisions.”

The book contains 52 black and white photos, four color photos, five one-page color action illustrations, and three one-page color tactical illustrations (which is exactly what I expected text to convey).

A rare miss.
